Sounds heavy right? No worries though, Hettie also does a fabulous job of smoothing the edges with witty humor and clever wordplay. And I equally adore each of the book’s players in spite of (or maybe because of) their darker parts. I can feel empathy and compassion for each of the characters because I can so clearly see both the light and the dark in each.

I could be reading from the “good” guy’s perspective, completely on their side, absolutely enthralled by their story and then in the next chapter, I’m reading about the “bad” guy and I find myself feeling the same thing. Beyond the plot, the best thing about this series is the complexity of the characters. I mean the poor man is a celibate sadist! And, unfortunately, Lauren has no choice but to be thrown in the middle of an old war between several alpha werewolves and their packs. It seems like I’ve been waiting for Kai’s story FOR-EV-UH! He’s so twisted and dark and broken. Lauren and Kai are inexplicably drawn to each other but they have huge obstacles in their way, obstacles that may be impossible to overcome. He’s also a sadist who has suppressed his urges for over a century since his fated mate, Maribel, severed their mating ties. She comes from a long line of seers but without her grandmother’s guidance, who was killed with the rest of the seers, she’s lost in the werelock world.

Lauren is a college student who’s just now coming into her powers. “Seers” are humans who have visions of the past, present and future visions that help and/or hinder the werelock community. Ten years ago, all of the seers in the world were killed by a maniacal werelock, Maribel. This is the first book in a SEER: A WERELOCK EVOLUTION SERIES DUET so if course this ends in a cliffhanger! If you haven’t read these books, now is a good time to jump in but you’d definitely get a better grip of the overall storyline if you started at the beginning.
